Culinary photography is a photographic speciality that focuses on creating attractive and tasty images of food and culinary dishes. These images are often used in cookbooks, food magazines, restaurants, menus and social media.
Food photography aims to present food in an attractive and tasty way, encouraging the viewer to try the food. This requires the ability to choose the right lighting, colours, frames and design for the food. The food photographer must also be able to pay attention to details such as portions, textures, proportions and placement of items on the plate. Nowadays, culinary photography has become a very popular field, especially thanks to the development of mass media.
- Lighting - It is important to use the right lighting to bring out the colour and texture of the food. Natural light is best, preferably in the morning or evening when the light is soft and warm. Avoid harsh artificial light, which can make the food look artificial.
- Background - It is a good idea to choose a background that contrasts with the colour of the food but does not obscure it. The best background is a light and simple one that does not distract from the food.
- Composition - It is important to compose the photo skilfully and pay attention to details such as the positioning of the food, side dishes and portions. It can also be helpful to apply the rule of thirds, which means placing the main element of the photo at one intersection of a grid of two parallel and three perpendicular lines.
- Sharpness - Make sure the photo is sharp and focuses on the most important elements of the dish, such as cuts of meat, vegetables or dessert.
Prices for culinary photography can vary depending on several factors, such as location, the experience of the photographer, the time and effort required to shoot, the number of images required for the project and the use of those images.
Costs can also vary depending on the type of project. For example, photographing one dish from a restaurant menu costs less than photographing an advertisement or cookbook. In Poland, they start at around PLN 500 per hour for a photographer, but can be much higher for more complex projects. It is also worth remembering that the costs do not end with the photograph itself, but also include the costs of photo processing, retouching and delivering the photos to the client.
